Celebrate Black History Month at the Library

Image from ALA.
Originally called "Negro History Week" and celebrated the second week of February, Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1926. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, upset by the absence or subjugation of African American contributions in American history textbooks, was responsible for creating what we now know as Black History Month. The original week expanded to a full month and now emcompasses the contributions of Africa to the Black experience in America. Dr. Woodson was also the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and the Journal of Negro History (Journal of African American History since 2002).
The Library is proud to offer a number of print and online resources about African American history as well as a wide array of novels by famous and popular African Americans. Be sure to check out our displays during the month of February and remember that any month is an opportunity to learn more about African American history and culture.
